The Impact of Physical - Spatial Structure on the Quality of Housing in Oil-Field Regions, with a Focus on Space Syntax Theory: A Case Study of the Ahvaz Oil Company Town

Cities heavily reliant on natural resources, particularly oil, exhibit unique patterns of growth and development. Khuzestan's oil-field cities, prime examples of this phenomenon, have undergone significant physical-spatial transformations characterized by extensive migrations and shifts in production patterns. One of the most notable developments has been the evolution of housing structures, consequently impacting the physical quality of residents' lives. Given the pivotal role of physical quality in urban planning, this research aims to investigate the historical development of the physical-spatial structure of housing in Khuzestan's extractive cities. To achieve a deeper understanding of the impact of physical changes on residents' quality of life, space syntax is employed as a tool to analyze social and spatial relationships within urban environments. The primary objective of this research is to identify influential components and examine the structure of the physical-spatial quality of housing in Ahvaz city utilizing the spatial method. Adopting a mixed-method approach, this research is interpretive in intent, inductive in logic, and incorporates both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. The findings reveal that despite the British architectural influence on Ahvaz Oil Company houses, these structures have successfully harmonized with local cultural, social, and climatic principles, as well as traditional Iranian-Islamic standards such as privacy. The effective separation of public and private spaces, coupled with multiple entrances, demonstrates the dynamic interplay between global and local influences in shaping the human-made environment.
