Isma’ili Thesis on the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy

Though it is widely assumed that Sunni Islam does not have an equivalent to the Christian ecclesiastical hierarchy, Shii groups such as the Medieval Ismailis did have an organised teaching, spiritual, and temporal hierarchy. Evidence gathered from primary sources shows that this Ismaili 'ecclesiastical' hierarchy is strictly intertwined with the Ismaili interpretation of Neoplatonic cosmology as well as with the political authority of prominent medieval Ismaili dynasties. It is widely accepted by scholars in Islamic studies that there is no ecclesiastical hierarchy in Islam or, in other words, that there is not one hierarchical body which can legislate in matters of religion and the authority of which is undisputed among Muslims. There are experts in religious matters, the 'ulama`, with their theological and legal specializations. However, these are only individuals, and no matter how highly esteemed they are, they do not represent a full body. Even when Muslim scholars have presented elaborations of Islamic creeds, it is understood that they are no more than individual formulations of belief, not official ones. This assumption perpetuates a myth: the myth of one, static, uniform and united Islam. This is the Islam that many Sunnis would like to believe exists, and the Islam that several Western scholars find more convenient to study. Recent introductory books on Islam have just started to include chapters which reflect a more accurate story: there is not one Islam, there are several Islams, or to put it more moderately, there are several interpretations of Islam. There is the mystical way, with its hierarchy of spiritual masters and angels, there is popular Islam with its hierarchy of saints, and there is Shii Islam. Even though Shiism represents only 10% of the total Muslim population, it is nevertheless very active, articulated and in itself composite. This paper examines the authority of the ""ecclesiastical"" hierarchy, that is the teaching, spiritual and temporal hierarchy, in Medieval Ismailism. My aim is to establish a relationship between this hierarchy and the cosmological doctrines of Medieval Ismailism. Even though Ismailism is not the only Shi'i group in Islam to exibit both an ecclesiastical hierarchy and a related cosmological structure (medieval Druze and Nusayri groups are two further examples), it has been chosen here because of the high degree of sophistication and the clarity in which these doctrines have been expressed.

A Critical Review of Qaffārī's Opinion on Infallibility with Regard to Shiite and Sunni Commentaries(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

The infallibility of Imams (AS) is one of the true beliefs of Shiites, for the Imam is the messenger of God and the guardian of the Divine religion. This fundamental belief has been disputed and challenged by the Shiite opponents, among them are the misconceptions raised by Dr. Qaffārī. His doubts include, for instance, the doubt that this belief has been innovative concerning its background, the rejection of Shiite reasons for infallibility regarding the Qur'an and intellect, and the fruitlessness of this belief for Shi’a. This study, first, deals with the doubts of Qaffārī about infallibility and then answers the doubts and objections raised in this regard, relying on the verses of the Holy Qur’an and Shiite and Sunni commentaries. Referring to the Holy Qur'an, it is proved that the subject of infallibility is mixed with the position of Imamate and succession. Accordingly, the source of division among the Islamic Ummah is the lack of belief in the infallibility of the Messenger of God (PBUH) and his successors, which has caused seditions and disputes since the death of the Prophet (PBUH) until now. As a result, to come out of the current conditions of the Islamic world, Muslims should believe in the necessity of obeying the Infallible 'Ul al-'Amr.

Explaining Wilāya-based Education and Proposing an Educational Model with Emphasis on Ziyārat Jāmiʿah Kabīrah(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

Background and Objective: Considering the various educational approaches, ( Wilāyah ) education is considered the most effective due to its link with the Almighty God. The use of Wilāyah education is crucial to the achievement of a genuine Islamic education. This study therefore focuses on the teachings of the Wilāyah in the light of Ziyārat Jāmiʿah Kabīrah as an example of the sources that link the teachings of the Imams to the Almighty God. The aim of the Wilayat education system is to present a comprehensive model of education to the community teachers. Method : This research employed purposeful sampling, utilizing the Ziyārat Jāmiʿah Kabīrah as a profound document on Imamate and Wilāyah . Based on this, a thematic analysis method was applied to continuously study the Ziyārat Jāmiʿah Kabīrah and its related interpretations. After extracting passages with similar content, the sub-themes of the research were compiled. Subsequently, the common themes were categorized under organizing themes: scientific, moral, social, emotional, spiritual, and biological education. All these themes were then subsumed under the overarching theme of Wilāyah education. Finally, the themes of Wilayat education were analyzed, and the necessity of placing them under the authority of God's representative was elucidated. Results and Conclusion : The results showed that Wilāya-based education is an effective educational model for achieving Islamic education. Following the Imam, who embodies the perfect and fully developed human being in all aspects of education, can lead to success in both worldly and eternal life
